Arthritis - Herbal remedies for arthritis are nature's pharmacy.

A lot of people agree that natural remedies are better for us than pharmaceuticals; no matter what the ailment.

In the search for natural remedies for arthritis, many that come to light are based on herbs. Of course availability is a factor, and the degree of your condition. The body more readily absorbs fresh juices, and herbs can be added to juices to double the benefits.. Here's a list of herbs, their properties, and how they can help.

Boswellia as an anti-inflammatory, can be as good a remedy as anti-inflammatory drugs (non-steroidal) but the advantage of the herbal remedy is that it does NOT lead to irritation and ulceration of the stomach, as the drugs can and often do.

Cayenne, or red pepper, can be used in a cream, and applied topically. It is very helpful in relieving pain from osteoarthritis.

Ginger is an excellent anti-inflammatory. 1 mg of powdered ginger on a daily basis, is extremely therapeutic. A teaspoonful of fresh grated ginger, even more so. This fresh ginger can also be boiled with water, as an infusion, taken twice daily.

Fresh ginger, or even ground ginger should be used in cooking, also very helpful.

Licorice root. Another anti-inflammatory, prolonged use will also raise blood pressure, and help with the dispelling of potassium.

Yucca. One of the most well-known natural painkillers in the fight against arthritis, has been used for many years as such.

Berries. Any deep red or blue coloured berries; blueberries, cherries, hawthorn berries etc are rich in flavonoids, which gives them their deep colouring. These compounds help by greatly enhancing collagen matrix integrity, and structure.

Celery, and celery seeds extract are wonderful natural anti-inflammatories.

Fenugreek seeds can be ingested, one tablespoon three times a day. Warmed and moistened, and moulded into a paste, can be packed onto the outside of painful areas.

Angelica root can be used as compress on painful areas, or Angelica oil added to a hot bath (about five drops to a tub) will help reduce spasms.

Juices

The following juices are good natural remedies for arthritis in their own right, but they can also be used to introduce the aforementioned herbs into the system. You can make your own 'cocktails' from these herbs and juices, according to your needs and your tastes.

Black cherry juice, excellent for arthritis. Absolutely one of mother nature's best! 4 ounces of juice twice daily, neat or diluted one-to-one with water.

With rheumatoid arthritis, the best juices are those high in anti-inflammatory nutrients. These nutrients include beta-carotene and copper. Beta-carotene comes from parsley, spinach, and broccoli. Apples, carrots and ginger contain copper.

Pineapple juice is another excellent choice. One or two glasses a day provide a rich source of the bromelain enzyme, having immense anti-inflammatory properties.

Other fruits and vegetables which can be combined to make very good juices for arthritis are;

celery, carrots, parsley, cabbage juice, potato juice, cherries, beetroot, cucumber, radish, garlic.

ONE THING TO WATCH OUT FOR :

Be very careful if you have osteoarthritis. With osteoarthritis you should avoid citrus fruits, which can promote swelling, and be very careful with the following vegetables (known as the nightshade family) : potatoes, tomatoes, aubergine and peppers. Nightshade vegetables contain psyllium alkaloids, which can cause problems with osteoarthritis.
